Summary :

Post Mortem

NUTZ was created for a project with the requirement that the game feature competition as its core aesthetic.  I chose to make a point based arena game due to the number of systems it would allow me to create.  The core mechanics was fairly simple to implement and allowed me to focus more on expanding my content and getting good feedback in.  The gameplay itself ended up being fairly chaotic and a little unfocused, but testers still found it fun in spite of this.

Overall, I'm satisfied with how the project turned out, even though a number of aspects could have been more polished. This was my first project in Unreal 4 and it allowed me to gain experience in a number of different areas that would prove to be invaluable in future projects.

The Good

The Bad

  • The game can be played from start to finish and showcases the intended aesthetic

  • It looks pretty polished thanks to Unreal's assets and lighting

  • I was able to create a lot of content within a short amount of time

  • The gameplay is unfocused due to the number of ways players can score points.  It's unclear what they should prioritize

  • The HUD looks really unpolished compared to the rest of the game

  • The blueprints were done hastily and it shows
